Here’s our favorites from our staycation!
Taz and I celebrated six months of marriage this weekend! He survived living with me for that long! He decided to surprise me and take me on a weekend vacation to an hour north of Provo in Salt Lake City since over our actual anniversary we will most likely be moving back to the sunny state of Florida. We wanted the “Utah” experience and the weekend didn’t disappoint. Here is our top 4 things to do in Salt Lake City.
1. Antelope Island State Park
We spent the Saturday at Antelope Island State Park. GO THERE! I highly recommend it! It is just about a half hour drive northwest of Salt Lake and has a $10 entrance fee. The Great Salt Lake surround the island and some gorgeous mountains flank it in every direction. It has hiking trails and camping sites which I will have to try out when it is warmer weather. We even ran into a buffalo a couple yards away from our car. I was terrified but I shouldn’t have had anything to worry about since he was content grazing in the field.
We stayed there until at sunset and it was so magical! The mountains turned purple and the skies pink when the sun sank under the horizon. The pictures turned out incredible and I know we weren’t the only ones who thought so since there were a couple photographers out taking family photos during the golden hour. The water reflected the mountains causing this local land to seem like an entirely different planet.
2. Ben’s Burger Bar
The best part of any day is good food! We drove up to Roy from Antelope Island to visit my great-uncle Ben’s restaurant Burger Bar. It was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives a few years ago and I can see why. It is delicious! Burger Bar is known for their burgers (obviously) but I decided to try their chicken sandwich since I generally avoid eating red meat. I can honestly say it was probably the best diner food I ever tasted and their milkshakes are absolutely divine!
3. Utah State Capitol
The next day was more relaxing spending the day downtown and one of my favorite spots we went to was the Utah State Capitol. The inside is gorgeous. Almost the entire atrium is carved marble with grand staircases flanking each wall up to the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court. The view from the hill is one of the best with a panorama of the entire city.
4. The Red Iguana
I have many guilty pleasures and chips and salsa is at the top of my list. Red Iguana was the perfect place to fulfill my craving on our last night in downtown. The Red Iguana was also featured on Food Network for its incredible menu. They make the mole seven different ways and for their delicious nachos. You may wait a while but the food is definitely worth every minute.
I am sad that we are now back to reality but this weekend was definitely what I needed to get through the rest of the semester and celebrate marriage with my favorite person. If you ever need a weekend away, Salt Lake City is the place to go. If you want to leave Utah and don’t know where to go, read all about our favorite city outside the state.
