What is a weighted blanket and how it works in my everyday life.
A couple months ago, I began seeing people talking using a weighted blanket to sleep at night. I had never heard of a weighted blanket before and I was intrigued. I started using one for myself and it quickly became a part of my self care routine. In this post, I’ll break down what a weighted blanket is, why people use one and how it’s benefited me in my life.
What is a Weighted Blanket?
A weighted blanket has Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation or DTPS. Basically, this means you feel like you’re being hugged or swaddled. DTPS encourages deeper sleep and apparently helps with insomnia along with many other things such as anxiety, ADHD, stress, and autism. Personally, I thought it sounded too good to be true so I put it to the test for myself. My Calm Blanket was kind enough to send me a weighted blanket to test out and see what I could discover. A weighted blanket should be 7-12% of your body weight. They come in 10, 15. 20, and 25 lbs. I figured out which one worked for my body from their super helpful chart and ordered what I needed.
Self Care Routine
I don’t suffer from any of those conditions I listed except, I do have many anxious moments. I wouldn’t consider myself diagnosed with anxiety, but I do get overwhelmed easily. From the beginning, I started incorporating my weighted blanket into my self care routine. Any time I get a chance to unwind, I’ll lay down on the couch and read or listen to a podcastOriginally, I tried sleeping under it to see if it would help me sleep deeper. I have no issues falling asleep, but I sleep really light and wake up to EVERYTHING! I tried sleeping under this a couple times and found myself waking up less during the night. However, I woke up feeling very sore in the morning. (It feels like I ran a mile, but maybe that means my body is working out in my sleep and I don’t have to during the day haha)
Because of that, I usually curl up under it while I’m working too. I found I can sit for longer periods of time when I’m using this rather than not having any blanket at all. Also, I get very cold so that helps too! The description says that it’s cooling in the summer and warm in the winter. However, I haven’t experienced the cooling aspect yet, but I was surprised that I don’t get uncomfortably hot.
Overall, my experience with weighted blankets has been very positive. Let me know if you tried out a weighted blanket in the comments and if you are interested in trying out a weighted blanket, make sure to check out My Calm Blanket.
